The first thing is the size and feel of North Berwick. Not as large as St Andrews but bigger than Dornoch. No large hotels like the Old Course Hotel. In fact I believe it's true to say there's nothing over two-storeys tall in North Berwick. The course is in the centre of the town and the local beach but a few yards from the first tee. And close by there's a public putting green. Not quite the same size as "The Himalayas" at St Andrews but has the same friendly family feel about it.
Sir Harry always maintained that he was descended from the Lauders of Bass Rock who go all the way back to around the early 1300s when Sir Robert Lauder was granted a charter for the Bass Rock and retained ownership of the rock for hundreds of years.
I'm OK with what I've done to capture my feelings for Glen Club's famous ‘Sea Hole’ but I'm still working on the view from the first green which offers a sweeping view of North Berwick and beyond.
In the old days North Berwick was referred to as the, "Biarritz of the North" and nowadays British golfers are actually going to the real thing with many of them deciding to live there, and if not in France then in places like Portugal and Spain.
