This relatively new arrival to this ancient course founded in 1832, came from the HMS Excalibur which was built after World War II as an experimental submarine driven by hydrogen peroxide. And when the experiment was over and it was scrapped the committee at Elie & Earlsferry bid ₤75 at a Ministry of Defence auction. The club won the auction and became the proud owner of this unique feature atop the starter's box.
Elsewhere it has been written that the Elie golf course is like entering a time machine. Founded in 1832 and has links with the great triumvirate of Vardon, Taylor and Braid. It's where James Braid began to play the game and it's been said that from a very early age he never ventured outside of his parent's home without a golf club in his hand.
